Sunday August 23rd the Toronto art and music collective MeThinks will be sharing their artwork at The Manhattan from 8pm-12am. They’ve been touring their work all across the Atlantic and are finally here to share their work.
Six artists have made a deal with the Devil to promote a touring art show and shoot a documentary video across Eastern Canada, by way of a flying canoe-houseboat-tour van hybrid, for the whole month of August.
WHO:
This project is helmed by six Methinks collaborators: Alex Bowron, Andrzej Tarasiuk, Karol Orzechowski, Lisa Keophila, Rick Kresta and Ryan Ringer.
Methinks has been a radical force in Canadian independent cultural activity since 2003 and has been featured in Canadian Art Magazine, the National Post, Toronto Star and other publications.
WHAT:
We Made a Deal with the Devil is a cultural expedition, touring art show and documentary video project.
The art show component of this project is a multisensory exploration of folklore, mythmaking, collective memory, adventure and risk. It showcases drawings, zines, installations, performance, live music and other projects by over 100 international artists.
WHERE:
This project will happen in various forms at campgrounds, public parks, inns, cultural centres and other sites between Toronto and Halifax.
WHEN:
This project is currently going on.
WHY:
We Made a Deal with the Devil will allow the Methinks crew to:
- Demonstrate innovation and vision in the field of DIY (do-it-yourself)/artist-run cultural production.
- Document, interact with and learn from creative communities across Eastern Canada, while exploring new cultural exchange opportunities.
- Expose new creative work to disparate Canadian audiences, while making positive cultural contributions to places they visit.
- Produce and present a multimedia document and discussion about the importance of travel and risk-taking in life – specifically in the life of the artist – while questioning the cultural, economic and social ideologies that dominate contemporary cultural production, community development and collectivity in Toronto and other urban centers.
HOW:
Volunteer-powered and in partnership with many community partners, this project is made possible through a series of donation-driven garage sales, an exhaustive lemonade drive, fundraising parties and private monetary donations.
Methinks will also be attending Messtival to share their artwork and perform in a live art set during Paranerd and Garbageface.

Friday June 5th at The Paramount, Something Delicious celebrated the release of their album “No Fun Intended” and they couldn’t have asked for more help from TBA Collective.
The evening was set as up as a late night talk show with TBA Collective frequent participant Jerry (Jeremy) Boudreau hosting the event with interviews from special guests Josue Goguen doing his mandolin Limp Bizkit cover set, Heather Narduzzi and Lolita Crawford presenting their food product the “bread durst” and known TBA host and personality Ewan Sinclair as a professional “Deliciousologist”. The band also had a pre skit before their set was played and two bandmates Jonah Hache and Pat Rouselle had body art made colaborativly from TBA artists Ian MacMillan (aka Legasee) and Pascal Leo Cormier. The skits were prerehearsed and organized by spearheaders Jonah Hache and Jerry Boudreau.

The event also included live art from Pascal Leo Cormier, limited edition USB sticks of the albums in the shape of burgers and hotdogs (designed by Ian MacMillan and Jonah Hache) moustache cookies, penis cake, free moustaches which were helped to get made from Penny Mazerolle, Pat Rousselle, Pascal Cormier, Ian MacMillan and were sold from the best volunteer in the world Shawn Chiasson (Underleaf) and his kickass girlfriend Natasha Theriault and photographer Cat Arseneault.

The album designed was sampled from sketches from artists Ian MacMillan (legasee.ca) and the logo was designed by drummer Geoff Moss as well as the album design was finalized and finished by Geoff and Jonah Hache.
Something Delicious remains comfortable integrating as much art concepts into their events as possible and cant seem to fit enough into their events. Also on stage, singer Jonah Hache snuck on a concept he took from a TBA minutes note that was an art Tshirt, where Jonah used T-shirt ink to make a painting on his shirt. The band also had an papermache’d and painted mask onstage that was attached onto a mic stand with a mic inside that’s attached to a vocal effects processor that the band uses. There was one concept the band didn’t have ready in time for the event but plans on using when the time is right! The band collected together their favourite artisticly styled videos into a compilation cue’d to the length of their setlist, but technically difficulties prevailed and they couldn’t present it during their release, but plan to in the future.

Over a time span of 4 hours, the pieces evolved into one thing, then another. The whole process was documented with a cam-corder and this video below is the 4 hours compressed into aprox. 10 minutes showing a fastmotion version of the evening to the music of Morse Code Alphabet and ambient sample-age of Jonah Hache.
Each piece is 2′ x 4′ and is a donation to TBA Collective and is on sale for $200 each. The profits from the peices go towards Messtival ‘09.
If you’re interested in purchasing one of the peices, please contact jonah@tbacollective.com !
Messtival ‘09 will also have a live art set during one of the acts.

TBA Collective took part in Reflux festival 09, an annual experimental music festival that took place all over Moncton NB during the second half of May. The evening of May 15th at the Aberdeen Cultural Center, artist Jonah Hache played an experimental music set during the opening ceremonies of the festival exposing the majority of his gear collection in a very non conventional fashion.
During the closing ceremonies, TBA Collective was invited to do a set which included the concept of live art between Jonah Hache and Pascal Leo Cormier while they’d play music into Paul Goguen’s (aka Paranerd) computer that would loop and layer while paul, modified the melodies and layered and composed beats over top of it all.

- Left to right - Pascal Leo Cormier, Jonah Hache, Paul Goguen (aka Paranerd)
After that set, TBA Collective musicians Eric Babineau, Jonah Hache, Pat Rousselle, Shawn Chaisson, Mario Gautreau, Geoff Moss, Wesley Thibodeau, and Pascal Leo Cormier did an experimental music set which included layers of texture, real life samples through v-drums and a world of space. The event went so successfully, the collective of musicians is looking forward to doing it again Thursday July 30th at the Paramount Lounge.
The peice created by Pascal Leo Cormier and Jonah Hache at Reflux can be found for sale on our site at this link.
